Dear Sir,

I am absolutely aghast at Tory controlled East Hampshire District Council’s plans to introduce parking charges in Alton’s public car parks on Sundays with effect from April.

Quite frankly, this is another example of a stealth tax. The Conservatives have been trumpeting their Council Tax freeze, but as I expected as night follows day it was entirely predictable.

This is a mean spirited change which will only drive away visitors from the town and customers from our High Street on a day when outlying car parks are nearly empty. What would be wrong with a free two-hour parking restriction?
